Perennial; basal internodes often swollen into globose corms. Panicle moderately dense. Spikelets 2-flowerd with or without an additional rudiment , the lower floret male and stoudy awned, the upper besexual and weakly awned or awnless, disarticulating above glumes and falling together; glumes unequal the upper as long as spikelet, 1-3-nerved with scaberulous keel; lemmas firmly membranous to subcoriaceous, rounded, bidenticulate, at least the lower geniculately awned from the back. Ovary hairy; hilum linear.
Europe, Mediterranean and Middle East.
Species 6. Weedy places and dry grassland.
