Tufted perennial, the vegetative shoots strongly laterally compressed. Panicle contracted, lobed, 1-sided, the spikelets crowded in compact fasicles at the end of short main branches. Spikelets 2-5-flowered, strongly laterally compressed; glumes keeled; lemmas thinly coriaceous, keeled, 5-nerved, spinously ciliate on keel, entire or bidentate, mucronate to briefly awned. Hilum round; endosperm soft.
Species 1. Temperate Eurasia, introduced elsewhere.
Habitat variable, including meadows, woodlands, waste land and stony hills. D. glomerata is a valuable forage grass.
