Annuals or perennials, in various habits. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle, branched
from all sides, rarely racemose. Spikelets pedicellate, falling entire from pedicel, terete, plano-convex,
or dorselly compressed, usually muticous and glagrous, 2-flowered; glumes herbaceous, occasionally
equal, usually unequal; lower glume usually not more than 1/2 as long as spikelet, 1-5 (-7)-veined or
veinless; upper glume as long as spikelets, rarely shorter, usually 5-11-veined; upper lemma resembling
upper glume, as long as spikelet; lower palea thinner, much shorter or absent; upper lemma glossy and
smooth, or transversely rugose, rarely tuberculate, glabrous or hairy at apex, indurate at maturity, lodicules
2; stamens 3; ovary glabrous; style 2, free, stigma plumose. Caryopsis free inside upper palea and
upper lemma.
A large genus of ca. 500 species distributed in tropical and warmer temperate regions of world;
eleven species and one variety found in Taiwan.
