Annuals or perennials, in various habits. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle, branched from all sides, rarely racemose. Spikelets pedicellate, falling entire from pedicel, terete, plano-convex, or dorselly compressed, usually muticous and glagrous, 2-flowered; glumes herbaceous, occasionally equal, usually unequal; lower glume usually not more than 1/2 as long as spikelet, 1-5 (-7)-veined or veinless; upper glume as long as spikelets, rarely shorter, usually 5-11-veined; upper lemma resembling upper glume, as long as spikelet; lower palea thinner, much shorter or absent; upper lemma glossy and smooth, or transversely rugose, rarely tuberculate, glabrous or hairy at apex, indurate at maturity, lodicules 2; stamens 3; ovary glabrous; style 2, free, stigma plumose. Caryopsis free inside upper palea and upper lemma.
