Annual or perennial. Panicle contracted to spiciform. Spikelets without rhachilla extension, falling entire together with pedicel orpart of it; glumes equal, longer than floret, chartaceous, ± scabrid, 1-erved, entire to bilobed, often with a slender awn; lemma hyaline, 5-nerved, rounded, the nerves sometimes excurrent from the ± trncate tip, awnless or with a subapical awnlet or a geniculate dorsal awn; palea 1/2 to as long as lemma.
Warm temperate regions of the world, and on tropical mountains.
