Culm tufted, up to 150 cm tall. Blade linear, grayish. Inflorescence in digitate spikes, spikes 6-10 cm long. Spikelets usually 1-flowered, about 1.8 mm long, sessile, imbricate in 2 rows along one side of the rachis; glumes chartaceous, 1-nerved, acute, lanceolate or deltoid-lanceolate; the lower glume persistent and 2/3 as long as the upper; lemma coriaceous, compressed and folded, deltoid-ovate, minutely ciliate on back, margins somewhat inrolled; palea chartaceous, strongly 2-keeled, as long as the lemma; upper floret usually reduced to a rachilla. Caryopsis oblong; embryo 1/2 the length of the caryopsis.

Locally this species is found only in southern Taiwan.
