Poa ferruginea Thunb., FI. Jap. 50. 1784.
Culm erect, tufted. Blade linear-lanceolate, 20-30 cm long by 5 mm wide, surface sparingly covered with silky hairs, especially at base; sheath-mouth covered with a ring of long silky hairs. Inflorescence a large open panicle, about 28 cm long. Spikelets blackish-purple, several-flowered, usually 7 florets, about 6 mm long by 2 mm wide; glumes subcoriaceous, 1-nerved; the lower linear lanceolate, about 1.2 mm long; the upper lanceolate, about 1.6 mm long; lemma of the same texture as the glumes, about 2.5 mm long, ovate, 3-nerved; palea chartaceous, about 2 mm long, elliptical, 2-keeled, minutely scabrid along keels. Caryopsis about 1 mm long reticulate on the surface, rectangular in cross-section, embryo 2/3 the length of the caryopsis.

Distributed in Sikkim and Tibet, extending to China and Japan.
In Taiwan, it has been collected on the hills of northern Taiwan.
