Perennials; culm glabrous, tufted, 80-130 cm tall. Blade 10-20 cm long, 5-8 mm wide; sheath longer than internode, compressed keeled, margins papillose-pilose; ligule membranaceous, 1-2 mm long, often with tawny hairs abaxially. Racemes 7-20, 5-8 cm long; rachis 2-4 mm wide, margins scabrous. Spikelets apiculate, paired, in 4-rows, at least in central part of raceme, broadly obovate, 2-2.5 mm long, purple or pale green, lower glume absent; upper glume and lower lemma equal, 3-veined, minutely crispid-puberulent; upper lemma brown at maturity, indurate; anther ca.0.9 mm long.
