Perennials; rhizome stout; culms erect, branched, to 1 m high; internodes with tubercle hairs, nodes
soft hairy. Blade up ot 20 cm long, 2-5 mm wide; ligule of a ring of long hairs, ca. 1 mm long; sheath
loose, shorter than inernode, ususlly covered with tubercled hairs. Panicle open, ca. 15 cm long,
branches capillary; pedicels long hairy. Spikelets laterally compressed, ca. 5 mm long, ovate, densely
covered with pink hairs, hairs to 6 mm long; pedicels slender, spikelet easily falling off from pedicel;
lower glume minute, ca. 1 mm long, covered with stiff short hairs; upper glume and lower lemma subequal,
5-veined, dentate at apex, awned from sinus; lower palea membranaceous, 2-keeled, ciliated on
keel, anthers ca. 2 mm long; upper lemma smooth and shiny, ca. 2 mm long.

Originally from tropical South Africa, now introduced into most warm countries. Taiwan, common
in waste places, roadsides and open fields at the southern part.
