Rhizome stout and short. Culms solid, fibrous, erect, slender, usually less than 2.5 cm in diameter. Blade less than 5 cm wide; ligule well developed; sheath long, hairy at the mouth, longer than the internode. Panicle enormous, with long silky hairs on the panicle-peduncle just beneath the inflorescence, pedicel funnel-shaped, falling off together with rachis-joint when mature, easily breaking up and scattered by the wind. Spikelets paired, monomorphic, the one pedicelled and the other sessile, awnless. Sessile spikelet oblong; callus long silky hairy, the hairs longer than the spikelet; glume nearly as long as the spikelet, glabrous; lower glume with margins infolded; upper glume boat-shaped; lower lemma slightly shorter than the spikelet, membranous; lower palea wanting; upper lemma membranous, but well developed, narrowly linear.

Cultivated in Taiwan.
