A small annual; culms usually geniculate; ligule membranous, 2-5 mm long. Panicle cylindrical, contracted, up to 6 cm long. Spikelets 1-flowered, elliptical or oblong, 2-2.5 mm long, flattened, falling entirely at maturity; glumes subequal, 2 mm long, keeled, free nearly to base, narrowly oblong, blulnmt, thin and membranous, 3-nerved, with silky hairs on the keels; lemma sa long as or very slightly shorter than the glumes, keeled, broadly elliptical, very blunt, membranous, 5-nerved, smooth, lower half united, awned from the back just below the middle, with awn included in the glumes or very slightly protruding; palea wanting; anthers 1 mm long. Caryopsis enclosed in the lemma, about 1 mm long.
