Thaumastochloa chenii Hsu,, Taiwania. 16: 335. 1971. Hsu, Fl. Taiwan 5:700. 1978.


Rhizome erect, short. Culm slender, 15-30 cm high. Blade narrowly linear, conduplicate, 10-20 cm long by 2.5-5 mm wide, glabrous, obtuse; sheath subcompressed, sheath-mouth ciliate; ligule very short, truncate, about 0.6 mm long. Inflorescence a spike of about 6 cm long by 2 mm wide, erect. Spikelets alternate on the rachis of about 4.5-5 mm long; upper spikelet completely reduced, the pedicel fused to the rachis-joint. Lower glume coriaceous, broadly elliptical-ovate, as long as the spikelet, dorsally wrinkled, distinct and narrowly winged, 7-nerved, internerves deeply pitted; upper glume broadly ovate, hyaline, about 4 mm long, acute, 3-nerved; lower lemma elliptical, about 3 mm long; lower palea bifid, about 1.4 mm long; upper lemma and palea elliptical, about 3 mm long.

Endemic, known only from the southernmost littoral region .
