Annuals; culm to 1 m long, decumbent and rooting at lower nodes, 15-40 cm tall. Blade lanceolate,
3-9 cm long, 8-20 mm wide, more or less papillose-pilose, margins scabrous; ligule hyaline, truncate,
ciliate above. Inflorescence of racemose racemes, 7-15 cm long; racemes 6-10, with densely-crowded
spikelets, central axis hairy, 0.5-3 cm long. Spikelets narrowly ovate, 2-4 mm long; glumes subequal,
1.5-3.5 mm long, awned, awn of lower glume 2-9 mm long, that of upper glume 0.2-1.9 mm long; lower
lemma exceeding glumes, 3-4 mm long, awnless or nearly so, usually enclosing a narrow hyaline pale
of ca. equal length to lower lemma; upper lemma smooth and shining, 2.5-3 mm long, apex with a
minute laterally compressed crest.
