Perennials; rhizome short. Culms tufted, 50-150 cm high; flowering clums arising from nodes below middle part; peduncle hairy. Blade 3-15 mm wide; ligule a ring of long hairs, ca. 1 mm long; sheath loose, hispid, margin ciliated, old remains persistent. Panicle contracted, 10-25 cm long, yellow to purplish, spikelets reflexed when mature. Bristles unequal, outer ones shorter, inner ones feathery, to 1 cm long. Spikelets ca. 3 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, more or less pubescent; lower glume reduced; upper glume and lower lemma subequal to spikelet, 5-veined, fringed at summit, ovate-elliptic; lower lemma enclosing lower palea of same length, lower palea with hairs at tip and on keels; upper floret cartilaginous, ca. 2 mm long; lodicule absent, anthers ca. 2 mm long.

Originally from tropical America and Africa, but now introduced to many countries. Taiwan, hillsides in the central and southern parts.
