Annuals to biennials; rhizome absent; clums branched and geniculate at lower nodes, sometimes
ascending, 20-50 cm high. Blade slightly infolded, ca. 10-20 cm long, 4-8 mm wide; ligule a ring of
hairs; sheath slightly compressed. Inflorescence a contracted cylindrical panicle, 4-15 cm long. Spikelets
2-3 mm long, subtended by brownish or purplish brown colored bristles, bristles 2-3-times as long
as spikelet; lower glume ca. 1/3 as long as spikelet, 3-veined; upper glume ca. 1/2 as long as spikeket, 5-
veined, lower lemma and upper glume subequal, 5-veined, enclosing a narrow lower palea; upper
lemma coriaceous, ovate-elliptic, rugose.
