In Fl. Madag. Aubréville (1974) placed all species currently recognized in Chrysophyllum under the genera Gambeya; Donella and Austrogambeya. Following Pennington (1991) The genera of Sapotaceae, Schatz & Gautier in Novon 6: 426-428 (1996), made an assessment of the genus describing one new species, and provided the necessary combinations in Chrysophyllum. However, recent molecular work (Anderberg & Swenson in Int. J. Plant Sci 164: 763-773) seem to indicate that Chrysophyllum is polyphyletic, and reversal to the names used by Aubréville. might ultimately become necessary.
