    Encycl., Suppl. 5: 130 (1817).

Senecio madagascariensis
isotype at P: Commerson

Credit: MNHN, France

  • Senecio bakeri Scott-Elliot
  • Senecio madagascariensis var. boutonii (Baker) Humbert
  • Senecio madagascariensis var. crassifolius Humbert
  • Senecio pellucidus DC.
  • Senecio ruderalis Harv.
  • Senecio skirrhodon DC.

    Distribution: Madagascar, The Seychelles, Africa

    Bioclimate: Humid, Subhumid, Subarid

Vegetation Formation: Thicket, Forest, Inselberg/Rock Face, Anthropic, Coastal Dunes

    Elevation (m): 0-499, 500-999, 1000-1499, 1500-1999

    Province: Fianarantsoa, Toliara

Protected Areas : Andohahela, Cap Sainte Marie, Kalambatritra

Important sites outside protected areas: La Table/St Augustin

Note: A weedy species native to Madagascar and SE Africa, that has been introduced and become naturalised in other parts of the world. The 2 varieties accepted by Humbert (Fl. Madagasc.) do not seem to us to merit recognition, and further we agree with Hilliard (1977: page 405) that these and the African S. skirrhodon DC are 'possibly no more than a form of S. madagascariensis', and we treat these names as synonyms accordingly. Matreial from high and low elevations seems indistinguishable.
