Note: A weedy species native to Madagascar and SE Africa, that has been introduced and become naturalised in other parts of the world. The 2 varieties accepted by Humbert (Fl. Madagasc.) do not seem to us to merit recognition, and further we agree with Hilliard (1977: page 405) that these and the African S. skirrhodon DC are 'possibly no more than a form of S. madagascariensis', and we treat these names as synonyms accordingly. Matreial from high and low elevations seems indistinguishable.
