Inflorescences unbranched or 2–4[–20]-branched. Flowers: nectary solitary, ventral [surrounding pistil], crescent-shaped [to oblong or annular, rarely 4-lobed or absent]; pistil diagonally oriented; ovary stipitate [sessile]; style slightly sinuous [straight to curved, hooked, or bent], tip modified as ± radially symmetrical [to strongly oblique] pollen presenter; stigma terminal [ventral]. Follicles sessile. x = 10.

Species ca. 365 (1 in the flora): introduced; s Africa, Pacific Islands (New Caledonia, New Guinea, Sulawesi), Australia (including Tasmania); introduced also widely in tropical and subtropical areas.
