1. Lomatogonium rotatum (Linnaeus) Fries, Summa Veg. Scand. 554. 1849.
[F]
Marsh felwort, lomatogone rotacé
Swertia rotata Linnaeus, Sp. Pl. 1: 226. 1753; Pleurogyne rotata (Linnaeus) Grisebach
Herbs 3–50(–60) cm. Leaves: proximal blades spatulate to elliptic-oblanceolate, middle and distal blades narrowly ovate to lanceolate or linear, 4–40 × 1–10 mm, apex obtuse to acuminate. Flowers: calyx 5–15 mm, lobes linear, apex acute or acuminate; corolla white to blue with darker veins, widely campanulate to subrotate, 5–20 mm, lobes elliptic-ovate, apex acute to apiculate, margins of nectaries forming a deeply fringed tube, 0.6–1.2 mm; stigmas strongly decurrent on the sutures of the ovary.
Varieties 3 (2 in the flora): North America, Eurasia. The report of 2n = 10 for Lomatogonium rotatum from the Manitoba shore of Hudson Bay by Á. Löve and D. Löve (1982b) is in accord with their earlier reports for this species in Iceland (Löve and Löve 1956; D. Löve 1953). More recently, however, 2n = 16 has been reported for L. rotatum in Iceland by Löve and Löve (1986) and in China by Yuan Y. M. and P. Küpfer (1993). No counts have been reported for var. fontanum. Reports of 2n = 10 for this species in any part of its range should be considered questionable.
