Plants acaulescent or caulescent. Stems, if present, 1–6, aerial or subterranean, shorter than 0.3 m. Leaf margins coarse, curling. Inflorescences arising completely within or extending 1/4 beyond rosettes; peduncle 0.6–0.8 m.
Flowering spring--early summer. Rocky slopes, pinyon, oak, and juniper woodlands, grasslands; 400--2500 m; Ariz., Calif., Colo., Nev., N.Mex., Tex., Utah; Mexico (Chihuahua).
