Staminate spike peduncles (3–)4–20 mm. Proximal cauline pistillate spikes short-pedunculate, ovoid to short-cylindric.

Fruiting late Apr–late Jul. Rocky, sandy, and loamy soils of open pine woodlands, open slopes, near mountain streams; 500–2600 m; B.C.; Calif., Oreg., Wash.
