120a. Eriogonum sphaerocephalum Douglas ex Bentham var. sphaerocephalum
Rock wild buckwheat
Leaf blades usually oblanceolate, mostly lanate to tomentose on both surfaces, margins usually plane. Inflorescences umbellate or compound-umbellate. Perianths bright yellow.
Flowering May-Jul. Sandy to gravelly flats and slopes, mixed grassland and sagebrush com-munities, juniper and montane conifer woodlands; (100-)300-2000(-2300) m; Calif., Idaho, Nev., Oreg., Wash.
Variety sphaerocephalum is common and widespread in eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and southwestern Idaho, less so in northern and central-western Nevada, and infrequent in California. A collection supposedly obtained in 1883 from the “Flathead region” of Montana (Ayres s.n., NY) is discounted as to location.
