Leaf blades 3-lobed, 2-2.5 cm wide. Flowers: hypanthium 6-12 mm, 2-3 times as long as sepals; sepals 3-4 mm; petals yellow, turning deep red.
Flowering Feb-Apr. Alluvial areas, foothill woodlands, forest edges; 100-1000 m; Calif.
Variety gracillimum occurs in the Central Valley and Coast Ranges.
