Annuals or perennials. Stems branched mostly beyond mid heights, leafy ± throughout. Leaves: basal blades lanceolate to oblanceolate 1–2.5(–5) cm wide (lengths 3–5 times widths); cauline blades spatulate, oblanceolate, or broadly linear; margins entire or serrulate; faces scabrous to hirsute. Peduncles to 1/3 plant heights. 2n = 38.

Flowering spring–fall. Prairies, meadows, roadsides; 10–500 m; Alta., B.C., Man., N.B., Nfld. and Labr. (Nfld.), N.S., Ont., P.E.I., Que., Sask.; Ala., Ark., Calif., Colo., Conn., Del., D.C., Fla., Ga., Idaho, Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kans., Ky., La., Maine, Md., Mass., Mich., Minn., Miss., Mo., Nebr., N.H., N.J., N.Mex., N.Y., N.C., N.Dak., Ohio, Okla., Oreg., Pa., R.I., S.C., S.Dak., Tenn., Tex., Utah, Vt., Va., Wash., W.Va., Wis., Wyo.
