Inflorescences 1-4(-6) cm; bract blade longer than internode. Flowers: hypanthia black-tipped stipitate-glandular; sepals reddish purple, ovate, black-tipped stipitate-glandular; petals broadly obovate, length 2+ times sepals; ovary ca. 1/2 inferior. 2n = 32.

Flowering summer. Sandy or gravelly arctic tundra, rocky mountain slopes, damp, open ground, often coastal; 0-1500 m; Greenland; N.W.T., Nunavut; Alaska; Atlantic Islands (Svalbard).
