Leaves: petiole villous, hairs tawny to brown; blade somewhat lustrous adaxially, 52-97 mm, abaxial surface densely villous, hairs tawny.
Flowering Jun-Jul. Upland and floodplain forests, sandhills, hammocks; 0-400 m; Ala., Ark., Fla., Ga., La., Miss., S.C.
The type for the species was collected in Georgia; subsp. lanuginosum occurs mostly in the southeastern states.
