Capsules inflated, obovoid. 2n = 40.

Flowering summer. Coastal bluffs, hillsides, grasslands, desert washes and flats, roadsides; 0-1300 m; Calif.; Mexico (Baja California).

Variety arborea, which has capsules intermediate in shape between vars. angustata and globosa, is found throughout most of the species range; it is uncommon in Baja California and absent in the northern part of the range of the species.
