Idaho barren-strawberry

Geum idahoense (Piper) Smedmark

Herbs, 15–40 cm. Leaves shallowly 3–5(–7)-lobed, 3–7 cm wide, surfaces hirsute. Inflorescences 3–8-flowered. Flowers 15–18 mm diam.; hypanthium broadly obconic, 2–3 mm, glabrous; petals ˂creamy yellow˃, broadly elliptic to suborbiculate, 5–8 mm, much longer than sepals, apex obtuse; carpels 4–7.

Flowering Jun. Mesic forest floors, under open canopy of grand fir or western red-cedar; of conservation concern; 500–1500 m; Idaho, Mont.

Waldsteinia idahoensis is easily distinguished and highly disjunct from other species of the genus. The species usually proliferates after clear-cuts. Most of the records are from the Clearwater Region of north-central Idaho.
