Leaves: blade broadly elliptic to suborbiculate, 3–5 cm, base broadly cuneate, lobe sinuses ± shallow to ± deep, apex obtuse to subacute. Flowers 12–17 mm diam. Pomes broadly ellipsoid to suborbicular.
Flowering Apr–May; fruiting Sep–Oct. Hedgerows, thickets, wood margins, dry areas; 100–300 m; Ont.; Ill., Ind., Iowa, Ky., Mich., Mo., Ohio, Pa., Va., W.Va., Wis.
Variety margarettae is the most common variety, occurring nearly throughout the range of the species. It has an uncommon form with distinctly pubescent inflorescences.
