Pedicels 1–1.5 mm, shorter than calyx. Calyces greenish purple at maturity, 1.6–1.8 mm. Capsules crowded-racemose to tightly clustered at branch tips. Seeds 3(–4).
Flowering summer; fruiting late summer–fall. Dry oak-hickory and pine-oak woodlands, savannas, barrens, usually on sandy soil; 0–300 m; Conn., Del., Ind., Md., Mass., N.J., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Pa., R.I., Va., W.Va.
