Panicles loosely flowered. Inner sepals brown in fruit, sometimes with some rust coloration. Seeds 4–6.
Flowering late spring–summer; fruiting summer–fall. Sandhills, pine barrens; 0–30 m; Fla.
Variety torreyi has the more restricted distribution of the two varieties, occurring only from the Florida panhandle to the vicinity of Lake Okeechobee.
