Leaves ± coriaceous, petiole 4–9 mm proximally; cauline blade 1.5–6.2 × 0.7–2.2 cm. Flowers: sepals bright red, 5–7 × 2–2.5 mm; petals magenta to light pink, 8–10(–11) × 3–6 mm. Capsules 35–55 mm. Seeds 0.9–1.6 × 0.4–0.5 mm, surfaces reticulate (smooth). 2n = 36.
Flowering Jun–Aug. Moist meadows, seeps, stream banks, mossy or rocky crevices, usually coastal; 0–500 m; B.C., Yukon; Alaska; Asia (Russian Far East).
Subspecies behringianum is a very distinctive coastal variant of the species, essentially replacing it in maritime areas from northern British Columbia, including Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands), through Pacific coastal Alaska, and in similar habitats along the northwestern Pacific coast in Russia.
