Stems, leaves, and flowers usually in higher part of size ranges for species; corollas usually medium to deep blue with dorsal greenish to dark purple lines adaxially on and below the lobes, occasionally paler, usually 35–55 mm.
Flowering late summer–fall. Wet mountain meadows; 1200–2200 m; Calif., Oreg.
There is a record of a hybrid of var. newberryi with Gentiana calycosa.
