Annuals (sometimes persisting). Leaves basal and cauline or mostly cauline; usually opposite, rarely alternate; blades simple or 1–2+-pinnately lobed. Calyculi of 6–10 bractlets. Phyllaries 8. Ray florets (5–)8, neuter; laminae yellow or ± proximally red-brown to purple (sometimes almost wholly red-brown to purple), obovate to cuneate, broadest distal to middles, apices ± 3-lobed (middle lobes often toothed). Disc florets 40–80(–100+); corollas red-brown to purple (at least at apices), lobes 4; style-branch apices ± truncate. Paleae linear (not distally dilated or attenuate). Cypselae ± oblong to spatulate, margins winged or not, wings ± membranous, entire, ± spreading, not ciliolate, faces glabrous, smooth or tuberculate; pappi 0, or of (1–)2 cusps or subulate scales 0.1–1(–1.4+) mm. x = 12 (+ 0–2 Bs).
