Pyrus Linnaeus sect. Torminaria de Candolle in A. P. de Candolle and A. L. P. P. de Candolle, Prodr. 2: 636. 1825; Torminalis Medikus

Trees, to 120[–200] dm. Winter buds glutinous [or not]. Leaves simple; petiole nodes 3-lacunate; blade margins relatively deeply lobed. Flowers: styles connate 1/2 their lengths. Pomes: epidermis multilayered; flesh composed entirely of tanniferous cells; core present.

Species 3 (1 in the flora): introduced, Washington; Eurasia, n Africa.

The two other species of this subgenus are of apparent hybrid origin, possibly with subg. Aria, and exhibit less deeply lobed leaves and pome flesh with tanniferous cells in groups.
