Trees and shrubs, sometimes scandent. Leaves opposite, entire, petioles dilated at base or united by a stipular sheath. Flowers in cymes forming racemes, corymbs or panicles, terminal or axillary; calyx deeply 5-fid, lobes broad, thick and imbricate; corolla with a long tube, lobes 5, broad, twisted to left in the bud; stamens 5, with filiform filaments; ovary 2-celled, the style filiform, with a capitate stigma; ovules numerous in each cell. Fruit a 1-2-celled berry; seeds very many, with horny endosperm.
