Perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Stems prostrate at base, erect above; rooting at nodes. Leaves lanceolate. Inflorescence a thyrse, terminal, with many-flowered branches; bracteoles scale-like. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic; sepals 3, free, greenish, persistent, elliptic, concave; petals 3, violet, unequal; stamens 6, fertile, anthers transversely elliptic; ovary laterally compressed, stipitate, Capsules bilocular, 2-valved, metallic, elliptic, lateral compressed, locules 1-seeded,. Seed elliptic in outline, dorsiventral, with radial stripes, light orange or blue, embryotega dorsal, hilum curved.
Species ca. 20, is centred in tropical Africa with extension into Asia and South America and Australia; one species in Taiwan.
