Plants 10-120 cm tall, glabrous. Rhizomes non-tuberous. Leaves 2.5-10 cm long, 1-6 cm wide, lanceolate to ovate or occasionally broadly ovate, base very broadly cuneate to rounded or truncate, rarely subcordate, apex short acuminate, margins denticulate. Flowering pedicels glabrous, perpendicular to axis of raceme, flowers distantly spaced, opening after elongation of raceme axis. Nectary exserted beyond opening of floral tube. Fruit 1.7-3.2 mm long, 1.2-2.1 mm thick, bilocular, 2-seeded, obovoid to broadly so, very slightly flattened dorsally, tapering smoothly to pedicel, without prominent ribs or sulci, but with a narrow groove representing an extension of pedicel. Fruiting pedicel and mature fruit 6-12 mm long. 2n=22. Flowers Jun-Sep; fruit Sep-Jul.

Distribution: Japan, except Ryukyu Islands; South Korea; and across central China to Yunnan. Rocky stream beds, seepages, along trails and road banks and in rich alluvial woods in temperate deciduous forests; near sea level to 2,500 m.
