  • Phalaenopsis amabilis var. aphrodite (Rchb. f.) Ames

    Stems stout, less than 2 cm long. Leaves elliptic, oblong or oblong-falcate, 8-22 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, base cuneate or sometimes oblique, thick, fleshy, with short broad sheaths; peduncle 20-50 cm long or more, with many subulate scales remotely spaced; rachis more or less zig-zag; bracts scale-like or triangular, 3-4 cm long; pedicel and ovary slender, 3.5-4.5 cm long. Flowers many, mainly white; dorsal sepal ovate-elliptic, 2.5-4 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, obtuse at apex, contracted at base; lateral sepals obliquely ovate-lanceolate, 2.7-3.5 cm long, 1.7-2.2 cm wide, acute at apex, contracted at base; petals rhombic-obovate, slightly oblique, 2.8-3.5 cm long, 3-3.8 cm wide, rounded at apex, narrowly clawed at base; lip 3-lobed, clawed at base, claw 8-10 mm long, 3 mm wide, lateral lobes falcate-obovate, erect or ascending, 2 cm long, acute or obtuse at apex, contracted at base, with red spots or lines near base, marked with yellow on distal edge, midlobe white, often tinged with yellow, rhombic-triangular, 2.8-3.5 cm long, 1.5-1.7 cm wide, acuminate towards apex, cuneate at base, with 2 slender tails ca. 1.5 cm long at apex; disc with a yellow, green-spotted forked callosity between two lateral lobes; column 1-1.2 cm long, with a broad foot extending to claw of lip, dilated at apex and base; anther cap rhombic-ovate, 3-4 mm long; pollinia ellipsoid, 1.5-2 mm long; stipe 4.5 mm long, tapering, folded; viscidium ovate-cordate, 2.3 mm long; rostellum 3-ridged, with 2 slender tips. Capsules fusiform, 3-4 cm long.

    The Philippines (Luzon and islands north of Mindanao). Taiwan, lowland forests in the southeast and Lutao and Lanyu Is., formerly abundant, now very rare.
