Note: In addition to the indigenous and certain naturalised species, the genus is represented by the cultivated food plants: S. melongena, S. tuberosum and the garden ornamental S. seaforthianum. The occurence of S. virgianum in Madagascar is based on a single specimen of doubtful origin (D'Arcy 1994). S. aphananthum is known just by 2 specimens and is classified with doubt in Solanaceae.
