Salix babylonica var. babylonica
Salix babylonica var. lavallei Dode
Distribution: Naturalized in Madagascar
Bioclimate: Humid, Subhumid
Vegetation Formation: Freshwater Wetland
Elevation (m): 1000-1499
Province: Antananarivo
Note: Few specimens from Madagascar of this plant, originally from China but naturalized in many parts of the world, exist. Its taxonomy is complex, with many hybrids and infraspecific taxa having been recorded. Without detailed study, and more representative specimens, further clarification of exactly what plants are present in Madagascar is impossible. Following the Flora of China treatment as far as varietal placement is concerned, the plants in Madagascar (if they are indeed true unhybridized S. babylonica) fall within var. babylonica. Leroy (Flore Mad.) refered the plants to var. lavallei. This variety has largely been overlooked in the literature, but appears to fall within the circumscription of var. babylonica sensu Flora of China. Flora Zambesiaca also refers the naturalized plants in that area to S. babylonica.
