Xyris capensis Thunb.
    Prodr. Pl. Cap. 12: 81 (1794).

  • Xyris semifuscata Bojer ex Baker

Distribution: Madagascar, The Mascarenes, Africa, Asia

    Bioclimate: Humid, Subhumid

Vegetation Formation: Grassland, Freshwater Wetland, Inselberg/Rock Face, Anthropic

    Elevation (m): 500-999, 1000-1499, 1500-1999

    Province: Antananarivo, Fianarantsoa

    Protected Areas : Ranomafana, Zahamena

Important sites outside protected areas: Ankaratra, Itremo/Ambatofinandrahana

Note: Material from Madagascar appears to be a good match for African specimens, but the species is variable, and we agree with Lock's comments in FTEA: "This is a highly variable taxon which may in fact be a complex of several, and there is need for a comprehensive revision throughout its range". Several infraspecific taxa have been described, and these too need careful evaluation. The protologue for X. semifuscata is available at http://www.botanicus.org/page/236849.
