Note: Claverie validly published the basionym of this species in 1905 in a note based on an oral presentation to the French "Académie des Sciences", he later (1909) added further information, an illustration and discussion of the morphology and anatomy of the plant referring to the plant as "Musa perrieri sp. nov.", but citing the same nomenclatural elements as in his 1905 publication. In making the combination in the genus Ensete, Cheesman regarded the name to have been validly published only in Claverie's later work, we regard this as an error. The name Musa perrieri was also attributed to Bonnier in Index Kewensis, presumably because he actually made the original oral presentation on Claverie's behalf. This species is poorly known, and rarely collected, but it can be distinguish from the African E. ventricosum, which is cultivated in Madagascar, by its yellow-green not red-purple leaf midribs and bracts, and warty not smooth seeds.
