Note: Variable species, the Malagasy type and other specimens generally matching the equally variable African material well, but highly diminutive plants are difficult to distinguish from X. humilis or may possibly grade into this species. In Africa two varieties have been recognized, differing in size, but these seem to be ranges in a continuum rather than distinct entities, and are not recognized here until further work can be undertaken. The species is probably naturalized in the New World.
