Note: Known from few specimens from scattered localities in the SW, this species may be more common, but it inconspicuous and may simply be often overlooked. There is a suggestion that it there may be more than one species in SW Madagascar (see http://bibliofile.mc.duke.edu/gww/Berenty/Plants/Hydnora-esculenta/index.html).
