Note: Var. nyassae from Tanzania was invalidly published, and the relationship between plants of this, other African material and the Malagasy plants requires further investigation. In Madagascar itself, the situation is unclear, Phylica is not well-collected, and the variation that clearly exists may be permit more than a single taxa to be recognised, based on the specimens currently available, the species shows a disjunction between the Andringitra and Itremo mountains on the central plateau, and near Moramanga on the eastern ascarpment. A specimen in TROPICOS from Andohahela (Humbert 13657 TAN) requires confirmation.
