羊舌树 yang she shu

Trees or shrubs. Twigs glabrous or rusty tomentellous to tomentose; small pith lamellated, often disappearing when dry; buds densely brown pubescent. Petiole 1--4 cm; leaf blade brown when dry, narrowly elliptic to narrowly obovate, 10--18(--26) X 2--5(--10) cm, leathery when dry, both surfaces glabrous or rarely abaxially with cobwebby hairs, papillate or rarely papillae only near base and very short but absent in var. epapillata, base cuneate, margin recurved and entire, denticulate, or dentate, apex mucronate-acuminate to acute, midvein adaxially impressed, lateral veins 7--18 pairs. Spikes or fascicles, from axils of leaves or from wood beneath them, 1--2 cm, usually branched from base; bracts and bractlets persistent in fruit, broadly ovate, 1--4 mm and 1--3 mm respectively, brown tomentose. Ovary 0.5--1 mm, glabrous. Calyx 1.5--2.5 mm; lobes ovate 1--1.5 mm, brown tomentose. Corolla 3--5 mm. Stamens 20--60. Disc cylindrical to pulvinate, glabrous or rarely villous. Style ca. 5 mm, glabrous. Drupes cylindrical to narrowly ovoid, 1.2--2 X 6--8 cm, apex with persistent erect calyx lobes, only 1 locule developed. Fl. Apr-Aug, fr. Aug-Oct.
