Leaf blade leathery, oblanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 4–9 × 2–3 cm; lateral veins prominent abaxially. Pedicel 3.5–5 cm; corolla funnel-campanulate, pink, 3.5–4 cm. Fl. Apr–May, fr. Jul–Aug.

Rhododendron simiarum var. deltoideum P. C. Tam, described from Hainan, was reported as differing from var. simiarum in its deltoid, reflexed calyx lobes. This feature occurs sporadically throughout the range of var. simiarum and is therefore considered to be of little taxonomic significance.
