Herbs perennial. Rhizomes with dense tawny crispate hairs at apex. Leaves usually 2 per plant; petiole 15--30 cm, glabrous except at base; leaf blade ovate to elliptic-ovate, 10--21(--30) X 8--16(--21.5) cm, thin papery when dry, glabrous or ± scurfy abaxially, base cordate, margin regularly denticulate, apex short acuminate. Scapes 20--30 cm, with dense rust-colored crimped hairs at base and toward apex, otherwise subglabrous. Racemes abbreviated, ± umbellate, 8--28-flowered; bracts linear-lanceolate, 7--10 mm. Pedicel 1.5--2 cm, densely rust-colored pilose. Flowers heterostylous. Calyx campanulate, 7--10(--12) mm, enlarging to 1.4 cm in fruit, glandular pubescent outside, prominently 10-veined; lobes ovate, 1--3 mm. Corolla rose; tube 1--1.2 cm; limb 1.2--1.5 cm wide; lobes obovate, 4--5 mm, emarginate. Pin flowers: stamens ca. 5 mm above base of corolla tube; style ca. 8 mm. Thrum flowers: stamens in upper part of corolla tube; style ca. 4 mm. Capsule obovoid, ca. 6 mm, operculate. Fl. Mar.
