Perennial. Stem 13-30 cm tall, simple, puberulent when young, later glabrescent. Leaves radical and cauline, long petiolate; blade orbicular-reniform, base broadly or narrowly cordate, pubescent on both surfaces, 3-5-lobed to near middle; lobes divided into oblong lobules or coarsely dentate; petiole 9-18 cm, dilated at base, subamplexicaul, sparsely pubescent. Inflorescence few-flowered, usually 2-, rarely 3-5-flowered. Bracts foliose, lobed. Pedicels 5.5-19 cm, obliquely ascending, subglabrous. Bracteoles green when dry, broadly lanceolate, 1.6-2.3 cm X 5-7 mm, closely adjacent to flower. Sepals creamy-yellow, yellow-brown pubescent outside, glabrous inside. Upper sepal broadly ovate, ca. 3 cm, apex subacute, spur broadly conical, straight, 1.2-1.5 cm X 6-8 mm; other sepals broadly ovate, ca. 2.4 X 2 cm. Petals dark purple, apex emarginate. Staminodes black-brown; limb ovate, yellow barbate, bifid. Stamen filaments glabrous, dilated below. Carpels 3; ovaries puberulent. Fl. Sep.
