Plants small to medium-sized to rather robust, (1.5–)3–15 cm high, bright green to yellowish green, in loose tufts. Stems erect, fragile, usually simple, rarely branched; triangular in cross section; central strand present. Leaves contorted-curved when dry, erectopatent when moist, broadly sheathing at the base, narrowly lanceolate above; costa stout, percurrent; upper leaf cells subquadrate to irregularly hexagonal, green, thick-walled, with several simple papillae; basal cells rectangular, smooth, usually hyaline. Dioicous. Setae elongate; capsules obovoid; opercula conic-rostrate, with a long, oblique beak, often persistent with columella; peristome teeth absent. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, yellowish brown, smooth or papillose.
